Athletes as Role Models

Role Model: noun

The lack of clarity regarding the function of "role models" begins with confusion about the meaning of the term.  What is a role model?  "Is it someone you look up to, someone who is positive, someone who gives back to the community, or someone you want to live like?"  Although sometimes used interchangeably with "idol, mentor, or hero," the term "role model" is more general.  Webster's Dictionary refers to the term "role model" as any, "Individual who is perceived as exemplary or worthy of  identification or imitation."  As a result, our youth may adapt the attitudes, behaviors, and aspirations of their role models through simple observation.  This idea of our youth drawing traits from a role model usually stems from the belief that the role models success is attainable.
